The Game that grips you:

At the age of 34 after my football exploits came to a grinding end; I became interested in Golf, a work college loaned me a 7 iron I think! and told me to go hit balls until they went straight, well they did go straight' everywhere except straight. So straight down to the library and read all the teaching books I could lay my hands on. So back to any field I could go too; I progressed in hitting the ball long now, still didn't know where it was going though, twelve months later of practising I found I could slice/fade a ball, so off to the golf course.

My first ever round in the fog I might add was 108 strokes, marvellous I thought. Another 12 months of proper golf I progressed from a 18 handicapper down to a 12 handicapper, now I've got the bug. My 10 year wait was over in joining a prodigious "The Open: qualifier club, the interview was intense about the rules, etiquette and discipline within the Club and of course playing ability tested with 3 rounds with the Club President and professional.

Over time I managed to fail in a lot of tournaments, I managed to finish runner up in so many more...dam this was hard to take but soldiering on is the name of the game, a win at last; the monkey off my back. So over the next 20 years I though I would document all the winnings that came my way. I'm now coming up to my 77th Birthday and still very competitive in a more relax atmosphere, getting a few wins still but more importantly I'm able to move the ball both ways now; why couldn't I do that earlier. I did manage to reduce my official handicap down to 4.3 but as age creeps up so does my the new world handicap. I'm still loving the challenge out on the course or courses.
